Clothing for Woodcock hunting

Woodcock hunting is one of the finest and most refined forms of bird hunting.

Among hunters, the woodcock is often referred to as “the wizard bird” – a name that reflects its elusive and unpredictable nature. One day the woods may be full of birds, and the next, completely empty.

This is because woodcock are migratory. They rest in the woods for a few days before moving on when the weather turns ideal for migration. November marks the time when large numbers begin their journey through Western Europe, travelling from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe towards the British Isles and France or Spain.

For the hunter, this offers some truly memorable days in the field with this shy and challenging bird. The woodcock is a swift and agile flyer, making it a real test of skill. When one finally succeeds in bringing a bird to hand, the satisfaction is second to none.

To make the most of every opportunity, one must be ready when the woodcock flushes — and that means having the right equipment, proper clothing, and well-practised shooting.

With pointing dog

Many hunters pursue their sport with a pointing dog and a small team of one to three people, creating truly memorable moments in the woods.

The dog is often equipped with a GPS collar or bell, allowing the handler to locate and recognise when and where the dog is on point.

When the dog points, the hunter quietly moves closer to gain a shooting opportunity. But the woodcock is notorious for its swift, fluttering flight and instinct to seek cover behind trees and bushes—resulting in plenty of missed shots.

CTX Membrane

Waterproof and breathable

November weather can be windy and wet, and clothing must be able to withstand a fair amount of rainfall. At the same time, woodcock hunting is a physically demanding form of hunting, where the body must be able to breathe through the clothing, and most woodcock hunters cover many kilometres during a day in the field.
For this purpose, Laksen Sporting’s own CTX membrane is exceptionally well suited. The membrane withstands a water column of 20,000 mm and offers breathability of up to 30,000 g/m²/24h.
This provides excellent waterproof protection combined with a very high level of breathability.
Other well-known membranes may offer slightly higher water column ratings, but with significantly lower breathability.
The CTX membrane is therefore particularly well suited for active hunters who walk long distances while still requiring a high level of waterproof performance.

Big pockets

Large, easily accessible pockets are a clear advantage during woodcock hunting – not only for quick access to cartridges, but also for gently carrying the harvested bird in the spacious pockets.

A pair of thin gloves with excellent feel for the firearm is also comfortable to wear.

Free movement

Woodcock shooting demands fast, instinctive reactions. In most cases, the hunter has only a few seconds to get onto the bird and take the shot.
Maximum freedom of movement is therefore essential for instinctive shooting—and in this respect, the Laksen Flush and Laksen Clay Pro jackets are truly outstanding.

Field test

We have tested the jackets ourselves on snipe hunting several times - here the Flush CTX shooting jacket. The day offered snipe hunting with 8.4 km of hiking over 4 hours in uneven terrain. The jacket is distinguished by its low weight of only 880 grams (size XXL-56 - Men 180cm/95kg)
