What is tweed made of?
Tweed is a classic and robust textile made from wool. The fabric has its origins in Scotland and Ireland, where it was originally developed to provide protection against wind, cold, and moisture in harsh climates.
Material and Composition
Traditionally, tweed is woven from 100% pure sheep’s wool, though modern production may include blends with synthetic fibres such as polyester or nylon. This enhances durability, shape retention, and lightness without compromising the fabric’s distinctive character.
Tweed is recognised for its dense and durable weave, often featuring distinctive patterns. The colours are typically achieved using natural or plant-based dyes, giving the fabric its classic, heathered appearance in earthy tones of brown, green, grey, and blue.
Tweed is especially valued for its natural properties: warm and wind-resistant, water-repellent, hard-wearing and long-lasting, breathable, and comfortable.
